Refund & Dispute Policy

How we handle issues with a rental

There Are No Automatic Refunds

Because BookShare rentals involve two people exchanging a physical book, we don't process instant, self-service refunds. Instead, if something goes wrong with a specific rental, either the reader or the owner can raise an issue directly on that order, and our team reviews it before deciding on a resolution.

When You Can Raise an Issue
  • Reader: the owner approved your request but the book was never actually delivered.
  • Owner: the reader confirmed receiving the book but hasn't returned it.
How Issues Are Resolved

Once an issue is raised, our team reviews the order and messages between both parties, then resolves it one of three ways:

  • Compensation to the affected party — the party responsible pays the other, capped at the book's market price and at whatever balance they actually have available.
  • Resolved with no compensation — used when the matter is settled outside compensation (e.g. the book turns up, or both sides reach an understanding).
  • Account action — in serious or repeated cases, the responsible account may be banned.

Every resolved dispute includes a note from our team explaining the outcome, visible on the order itself.

Withdrawal Refunds

If you request a withdrawal of your wallet balance and it's rejected or later marked as failed, the full amount is automatically returned to your wallet — no action needed on your part.

Wallet Reloads

Money added to your wallet through our payment gateway is meant to be used for rentals on BookShare. If a reload payment fails or is cancelled before completing, you are not charged.

Questions?

See our Payment Info page for how wallet payments and payouts work, or contact us with general questions. For a specific rental issue, please raise it on that order rather than emailing, so our team has the full context.
